If you see a message while you’re downloading Big Sur that says, 'macOS Big Sur download has failed,' there could be a number of reasons. Here’s what to do when macOS Big Sur won’t download.

To quit the unresponsive app, press Command-Option-Esc. This will initiate a Force Quit menu. Click the app that makes your macOS freeze (it will usually have not responding status) and press Force Quit.

If the problem persists, running CleanMyMac X can help fix performance issues, including freezing. Here’s how you can quickly get your Mac back to normal:

1. Download CleanMyMac X (a free trial is available).
2. Install and launch the app. Go to the Maintenance feature.
3. Check the boxes next to the processes you want to run (we recommend selecting the first four fixes and Repair Disk Permissions).
4. Press Run.

• Check the display — has your Mac failed to start up, or has it started up, but you just can’t see anything on the screen? Modern Macs don’t chime when they start up, so it can be difficult to tell. If you’re using a Mac mini or a Mac Pro or have a laptop connected to an external display with its lid closed, make sure it's not the display that’s the problem. Check the connections. Try rebooting with the display switched off and turn it on during start-up.
• Try another user account — if the problem occurs after you type in your password to log in, try a different user account. If that works, the problem is likely to be login items or launch agents in your main user accounts.
• Boot in Safe mode — if nothing else works, try booting in Safe mode by holding down Shift while it boots. That will boot your Mac with the bare minimum it needs to run and won’t load login items and launch agents. If that works, you know the problem is in third-party software that loads at boot time.

6. macOS Big Sur is running slow

This is perhaps the most common problem you’re likely to run into with Big Sur. It’s logical to assume that a new version of macOS should run faster than previous versions. And in some cases, that’s true. For example, Safari tends to speed up with every release. But new versions of the OS also put more pressure on system resources.

So, if you have a Mac that’s a few years old, you are likely to encounter that the macOS Big Sur is running slow. There is plenty you can do to mitigate that, though.

Mao Zedong: The Communist revolutionary and founding father of the People's Republic of China. The man who dragged 'The Middle Kingdom' kicking and screaming into his particular brand of The Future, which sometimes involved plenty of actual kicking and screaming. As the New York Review of Books tells us, he was a tyrant whose policies and decisions caused the deaths of an estimated 42.5 million people ... though the Los Angeles Times estimates the figure could be as high as 80 million people, which incidentally means his death toll may well be higher than Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler put together.

While most people are at least passingly familiar with the atrocities of Hitler and Stalin, there's a possibility you may have missed the ones Chairman Mao committed. After all, he did his thing in 'distant' China, and thus avoids being mentioned in some of the more Europe-centric history writings. Let's fix that by taking a long, hard look at the messed up truth of Mao Zedong.

Mao Zedong maintained a quota of death

Despite the absurdly high body count history has placed on his shoulders, Mao Zedong didn't exactly walk around China killing millions of people with his own hands. However, that's not to say he didn't find a way to have a personal touch. According to South China Morning Post, historian Frank Dikotter says Mao didn't merely ignore a significant portion of his people to death. Instead, he actually gave his peasant supporters an official quota for killing 'landlords,' who in reality were mostly just ordinary farmers and their families. The quota was 'one per thousand members of population,' meaning the Chairman specifically ordered his countrymen to kill 0.1 percent of the population ... though he was reportedly just fine with a death toll of up to three per thousand.

The reason behind this ruthless order was as pragmatic as it was horrifying. Mao's goal was to make his people bloody their hands personally, so everyone had committed terrible deeds in the rise of Mao's regime. This means they had plenty of reason to fear the potential return of the old rule, which they now had personally (and bloodily) helped to overthrow.

Mao Zedong's 'Great Leap Forward' was a disaster

Mao Zedong was a man with big dreams, and unfortunately, he also tried to make them become real — regardless of whether they were possible. We're talking, of course, about the Great Leap Forward, which ThoughtCo tells us was Mao's attempt to modernize China's farming society into an industrial one. There was just one problem: He tried to do this in just five years.

From 1958 to 1960, China moved millions of people into communes with specific tasks, such as manufacturing or farming. Mao also wanted to make China a self-sufficient steel producer, so people had to set up 'backyard steel furnaces' and meet strict production quotas. Unfortunately, as Professor Vaclav Smil (via PubMed Central) notes, former farmers proved to be less than proficient at suddenly producing top-quality steel, and the end product tended to be brittle and unusable.

Meanwhile, Mao used absurd Soviet notions of farming to increase crops while also pulling more and more workers from farming to manufacturing. His farming tactics managed to harm 'countless acres of farmland,' while all those peasant-run smelters required people to chop down forests, which in turn led to erosion. The environmental damage the Great Leap Forward caused was horrendous. The human suffering from it and the famine that soon followed was even worse.

Mao Zedong and the Great Famine

Between 1959 and 1961, China went through the ominously named Great Famine, and according to Professor Vaclav Smil (via PubMed Central), the name was well-deserved. It is considered to be the largest famine in all of human history. In less than two years, millions of people starved to death, and although an unfortunate period of drought played a part, the tragedy was largely the result of Mao Zedong's ill-advised decision to initiate the Great Leap Forward, which completely failed to account for necessary food production. The pressures of the Great Leap also caused officials to submit completely fake reports of huge, record-breaking harvests, which meant that there was far more grain on paper than there was in reality.

Unfortunately, the crisis was just as badly managed as the events that led up to it. There was no food surplus to fall back on, either, as the supply and demand of food had been pretty much equal before disaster struck. The officials also took their sweet time even acknowledging the situation, and neglected to secure food aid in a swift manner. In the end, an estimated 30 million people perished because of the Great Famine, and as ThoughtCo tells us, the combined death toll of the Great Leap Forward and the famine could be as high as 48 million.

Download a copy of the2Z691-5305-A OS X Tiger installation DVDand burn it to a physical DVD.

Note: for some reason qemu does not seem to be able to boot .iso files of the OS X installation DVD (using -cdrom tiger.iso),but if you burn that .iso to a physical DVD and then use -cdrom /dev/disk2, it works.

Boot the DVD to verify it works:

If you see the grey Apple logo, the DVD is working correctly with QEMU:

Quit QEMU and create a 127GB QEMU disk:

Boot the install DVD with the disk attached and being the installation. QEMU will exit when the installer reboots.

When the installer reaches the disk selection screen, there will be no disks to choose from, because the disk has not been partitioned yet:

Start up Disk Utility:

'Erase' the disk to partition and format it:

Quit Disk Utility and the installer should now see the newly formatted partition:

Note that you will instead see the email as a Mail Attachment file paired with the encrypted.asc file. You can download this asc file and use it to decrypt the message on the command line.

Note on Usage

This guide is recommended for a specific use case, in which you only use Thunderbird as a tool for email encryption, while reading and sending unencrypted email through their webmail interface in a browser or through a different client.

You can still use Thunderbird as your regular mail client, and we recommend it if you prefer to download your email to a secure device instead of leaving it in the servers of your email provider. For this latter case, we will recommend alternative settings in the relevant sections.

Thunderbird is a free and open source, cross-platform email client for sending, receiving and storing email. An email client is an application that lets you download and manage your messages — from multiple accounts with multiple providers — without a browser.

Gnu Privacy Guard (GPG) is free and open source software capable of encrypting, decrypting and digitally signing messages and files. It also generates and manages the public and private keys needed to do so.

Enigmail Enigmail is an add-on for Thunderbird to encrypt, decrypt and sign emails, and to manage PGP keys.

1.0 Things you should know before you start

You will need at least one email account to use Thunderbird. If you want to create a new account to use with Thunderbird, you can find a list of privacy-conscious email services here.

Like all email clients, Thunderbird makes a copy of your messages available on your computer. This includes the emails you send as well as those you receive. As a result, it is particularly important that you have full-disk encryption enabled if you intend to use Thunderbird. To do so, check that FileVault2 is enabled before starting this guide.

Thunderbird cannot protect your device if you open malicious attachments or click on malicious links. Do not open unsolicited attachments and exercise caution when clicking on links that were sent to you by email. Learn how to Protect your device from Malware and Hackers.

In order to better protect the data in your computer, we highly recommend making sure that your device is encrypted. To do so, check that FileVault2 is enabled before starting this guide.

1.1 Other tools like Thunderbird

Thunderbird is available for GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows and macOS. Securely managing multiple email accounts is a complex task, and we strongly recommend Thunderbird for this purpose. However, if you prefer to use an alternative we recommend the following free and open source tools:

• Claws Mail is available for GNU Linux and Microsoft Windows
• Sylpheed is available for macOS, GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows
• K9 Mail and OpenKeychain are available for Android
• Mailpile is available for GNU/Linux (and should be available for Windows and macOS in the future).

The security advantages of Thunderbird are significant, particularly when compared to commercial alternatives like Microsoft Outlook.

2.1 Download and Install GPG Suite

In order to encrypt your emails, you will first need to download and install GPG Suite, the encryption manager that enables your computer to encrypt your emails.

1. Download GPG Suite by clicking the 'Download' button in GPG Suite website.

2. Check 'Save File' and click 'OK' in the prompt that pops up.

3. Once you have downloaded the file (which will be called GPG_Suite-YEAR.MONTH.dmg), verify it by following the below steps:

   • Hover over 'SHA256' on the download page below the download button, to visualize a sequence of numbers and characters.

   • On your machine, open a terminal

   • Enter the command below in the terminal:
